Elephant Coast Ten Day Itinerary


Experience the true essence of Africa on our ten day tour of the Elephant Coast. Meet the world's biggest elephants, face to face, in the wild.

There is also amazing bird watching, scuba diving and snorkelling, fishing and cultural experiences - literally an eco-tourism paradise. On top of this, the huge leatherback turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs.
 

Day 1: Durban - Leopard Mountain Lodge

Arrival at Durban Airport you will be welcomed by an Elephant Coast safari representative and transferred into Maputaland. Stopping along the way to enjoy a picnic lunch at Enseleni Game Reserve and arrive in the later afternoon at Leopard Mountain Lodge.
 
The stone and thatch chalets nestled in the cliff tops overlook the Umzunduze River and african plains creating a tranquil setting. Relax cradled in a hammock on your own private deck with the serenading calls to the sinking sun. Activities arranged depending on arrival time. Lunch/Dinner

Day 2: Leopard Mountain Lodge to Shayamoya

After a hearty buffet breakfast clients have the choice of either viewing game on horseback or by foot or a game drive into Hluhluwe or Mkuze Game Reserves. After lunch we transfer across to Shayamoya.
 
This family run lodge offers genuine hospitality and is set alongside the Pongolapoort Dam and is part of a proposed biosphere reserve that will incorporate the 1200 ha Phongolo Nature Reserve. Enjoy a sunset cruise or take a hand in fishing. Relax watching goliath herons or painted snipe and greenshanks on the mudbanks, completed by a fireside bush braai under the stars. FULL BOARD

Day 3: Shayamoya to Tembe Elephant Park

After breakfast the morning is spent either fishing or enjoying a guided walk in the Phongolo Nature Reserve. We then transfer to Tembe Elephant Park which is home to the province's biggest indigenous elephant herd. This luxurious tented safari lodge with each unit tucked secludedly away in the sand forest adds to the untamed african experience.
 
After a leisurely lunch and a swim in the lodge's thatch-sheltered swimming pool we spend the latter afternoon searching for these elusive giants, stopping at Mathlasela hide and waterhole at dusk and retire back for a campfire dinner. FULL BOARD

Day 4/5: Tembe Elephant Park

Limited access into Tembe Elephant Park restrict the Tembe experience to a small exclusive groups who are given the opportunity to enjoy the elephants as well as the parks profuse diversity of fauna and flora. Biggest african elephants in the world. With 300 square kilometres in extent, Tembe is the third largest game reserve in Kwa Zulu Natal, home to four of the Big Five and the rare suni antelope, one of the smallest species of buck in Southern Africa.
 
Morning and afternoon games drives allow guests to view a variety of wildlife which includes black and white rhino, buffalo, leopard, hippo, eland, zebra, giraffe, hyena, jackal, wildebeest, nyala, kudu, reedbuck, red duiker and other small mammals that thrive in abundance.
 
The evening game drive allows clients to enjoy the enigmatic call of the nightjar or the Rufous-bellied night heron and other nocturnal creatures. FULL BOARD

Day 6: Day Trip to Ndumo

A day trip to Ndumo is a must for it is undoudtedly one of the top birding spots in South Africa.
 
Ndumo's 10 000 ha flood plain comprises a delicate latticework of lakes with three large pans (Banzi, Nyamiti and Shokwe) which create the biodiversity of a far larger park and are home to 430 species of birds, 45 species of amphibians, 62 varieties of mammals and more than 200 species of trees. Picnic lunch is enjoyed at a look out point ending this perfect day with a traditional barbecue complimented by Thonga dancing. FULL BOARD

Day 7: Tembe to Kosi Forest Lodge

After an early morning game drive and brunch we transfer to Kosi Bay Forest Lodge and Nature Reserve. The Lake system comprises of several lakes interconnected by channels, home to a variety of fish and birds and spans over 10 kilometres. Dotted here and there are the locals reed fish traps.
 
The morning is spent at Kosi Bay mouth which is exceptionally clear and ideally suited for snorkelling. Why not enjoy a walk with the wind in your hair or partake in canoeing or a boat trip through the Kosi Lakes or go birding in the Raffia forest or just simply sunbath. Relax in a unique open air en-suite bath which is sunken in white sand, hidden in the Sandforest. FULL BOARD

Day 8: Kosi Forest Lodge to Rocktail Bay

After a leisurely breakfast we transfer across to Rocktail Bay which received its name after a trawling ship, the Rocktail, which was wrecked offshore. It offers an unspoilt and secluded pristine white beach, the best Maputuland's coastline offers. The day is spent at leisure with either snorkelling or scuba diving and by night turtle tracking is offered in season (mid Nov - mid Jan). This enchanting and charming Lodge has been designed to blend into the depths of the lush coastal forest, a stone's throw from the beach. FULL BOARD

Day 9: Rocktail Bay to Lake Sibaya

We then move onto Lake Sibaya Lodge, South Africa's largest fresh water Lake. A sunset cruise on a traditional Arabian Dhow offers guests sunset cruises, the quiet lap of the water and the rustle of the breeze in the sails combined with traditional dancing with drums, carved pipes and horns provide a perfect end to the day. Day 10: Lake Sibaya to Durban

Depart after breakfast to Durban via a cultural village where we have the opportunity to purchase the local handicrafts and visit a local sangoma for ancient herbal remedies or perhaps have our fortune told. A packed lunch is enjoyed at Enseleni Game reserve and we end our safari in the early evening. Breakfast/Lunch
